Eurosky Launches as European Alternative to Big Tech Social Media
Eurosky, a new Netherlands-based initiative, has officially launched to provide European users with a sovereign alternative to dominant US tech giants like Meta and X. Rather than functioning as a standalone social media platform, Eurosky offers a digital identity infrastructure known as a Personal Data Server (PDS). This system ensures users retain full ownership of their data, which is hosted on European servers in strict compliance with EU laws. By leveraging the AT Protocol, the framework underpinning services like Bluesky, Eurosky allows users to connect with various applications while maintaining control over their personal information. The launch occurs amidst rising tensions between Brussels and US technology companies, following significant fines against X for transparency breaches and concerns regarding addictive design practices. Co-founder Sebastian Vogelsang emphasizes the goal of restoring the 'social' aspect to social media through a flourishing ecosystem of innovation. Although currently relying partly on Bluesky’s infrastructure for content moderation, Eurosky has outlined a roadmap toward full independence, including the development of a shared moderation system for European developers. The project involves a coalition of entrepreneurs, technologists, and civil society groups aiming to challenge the market dominance of major global tech corporations.
