Egypt Raises Electricity Prices Amid Energy Crisis and Fiscal Pressure
Egypt has announced an increase in electricity prices for high-consumption residential households and commercial users, effective April. The Electricity Ministry cited a severe global energy crisis exacerbated by the ongoing war in the Gulf region as the primary driver. This measure aims to curb energy consumption and alleviate mounting fiscal pressure caused by soaring import costs. While tariffs for lower-consumption households (up to 2,000 kWh) remain unchanged, higher residential brackets will see an average 16% hike, and commercial rates will rise by approximately 20%. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly noted that Egypt's energy import bill has more than doubled since the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran began. The country is already facing significant economic challenges, including heavy debt burdens where interest payments consume half of government spending and double-digit inflation. These price adjustments follow earlier rationalization measures implemented in March to manage the strain on public finances.
