Delhi PWD Plans Overbridges and Tunnels to Ease Railway Crossing Congestion
The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has announced plans to conduct feasibility studies for constructing overbridges, underpasses, and limited-height subways at major railway crossings to alleviate severe traffic congestion. Currently, approximately eight to ten manned railway crossings across North, Northwest, Outer, and East Delhi, including those on the Delhi-Ambala, Delhi-Bathinda, and Delhi-Bharuch lines, cause significant bottlenecks. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh highlighted that heavy vehicle loads force commuters to wait for hours or take long detours, contributing to vehicular and dust pollution. The department will survey specific sites, such as the line between Punjabi Bagh and Paschim Vihar, to determine whether tunnels or overbridges are more viable. The comprehensive study will assess vehicle flow, peak-hour loads using Train Vehicle Unit metrics, and existing infrastructure like utility pipelines and encroachments. Upon completion, a Detailed Project Report will be prepared. Additionally, the PWD intends to study the feasibility of flyovers and elevated corridors along Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road and other key arteries to improve connectivity towards Southwest Delhi, aiming to streamline movement for lakhs of daily commuters.
