Congress Launches Internal Review After Assam Election Defeat

Following the Indian National Congress party's defeat in the Assam Assembly elections, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi announced the initiation of an internal review process. Speaking in Guwahati, Gogoi accepted full responsibility for the electoral setback and outlined plans for organizational restructuring and strategic reassessment. The review is currently in its second phase, involving consultations with district-level leaders, former MLAs, and candidates to identify key reasons for the poor performance. Gogoi rejected allegations by Badruddin Ajmal that Congress resembles the Muslim League, reaffirming the party's commitment to constitutional values and inclusive politics. He further alleged that parties like AIUDF and AIMIM indirectly benefited the BJP by dividing opposition votes. Additionally, Gogoi criticized the state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for governance issues, including artificial flooding in Guwahati and lack of transparency in coal sector operations. The party aims to strengthen its organization and reconnect with the public while maintaining alliances with partner groups, despite some individuals aligning with the ruling party's narrative during the campaign.
