CNG Prices Rise to Rs 92.25/kg in Pune, Impacting Auto Drivers and Commuters
Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has increased the retail price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by Rs 1.50 per kg, effective May 9, 2026. The new rate of Rs 92.25 per kg applies to Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding areas including Chakan and Hinjewadi. MNGL attributed the hike to rising input costs for natural gas, though it noted that CNG remains significantly cheaper than petrol and diesel. The increase places additional financial strain on daily commuters and professional drivers, particularly auto-rickshaw and cab operators, for whom fuel is a major operating expense. Bapu Bhave, president of a local transport union, highlighted that the sector is already struggling due to competition from the expanding metro network and stagnant fares. Consequently, the union plans to petition the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) for a fare revision, proposing an increase of Rs 3 for the initial 1.5 km and Rs 1 per subsequent kilometer.
