Chrome Silently Downloads 4GB AI Model Without User Consent

Google Chrome has been reported to automatically download a 4GB artificial intelligence model, known as Gemini Nano, onto users' devices without explicit prior notification. This on-device model supports features such as scam detection, tab organization, and writing assistance. The file, named 'weights.bin,' is stored in the OptGuideOnDeviceModel folder and was identified by privacy researchers on Windows machines running Chrome version 147. While Google states that the model helps enhance browser functionality locally, it consumes significant storage space. Users who wish to remove the file can manually delete it, but it will reappear if on-device AI features remain enabled. To permanently stop the download and free up storage, users must navigate to Chrome Settings, select System, and disable the On-device AI option. Google clarified that the model is designed to automatically uninstall if the device detects low storage resources. Additionally, the company recently introduced a user-controlled setting to easily toggle these features off, ensuring the model does not download or update once disabled. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding software transparency and resource management in modern web browsers.
