China's Vehicle Trade-In Subsidy Applications Surpass 10 Million in 2025
China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that applications for the national vehicle trade-in subsidy program exceeded 10 million as of October 22, 2025. The initiative is a significant driver in promoting the green transition within the automotive sector. Of the total applications, over 6.6 million were for vehicle replacements, while more than 3.4 million were specifically for scrappage and renewal. Notably, new energy vehicles accounted for 57.2% of all trade-in applications this year, highlighting a strong shift toward electrification. The program has also substantially boosted resource recycling efforts. In the first three quarters of 2025, 7.345 million vehicles were scrapped and recycled, representing a 47.9% year-on-year increase. Industry estimates indicate that these recycling activities recovered approximately 7.1 million tons of steel, 920,000 tons of aluminum, and 930,000 tons of plastic. Consequently, these efforts have helped reduce carbon emissions by more than 21 million tons.
