China’s revised mandatory national standard, titled the Safety Technical Specifications for Electric Bicycles, officially came into effect on September 1. This regulatory update significantly tightens safety and performance requirements for the electric bicycle industry to enhance public safety and reduce fire risks. Key provisions include a strict limit on plastic components, which must not exceed 5.5% of the vehicle's total weight. Additionally, electric bicycles are required to automatically cut power when speeds surpass 25 km/h, supported by stricter anti-tampering measures to prevent unauthorized modifications. For models equipped with lead-acid batteries, the maximum weight limit has been increased to 63 kilograms to improve driving range. A transition period is in place, allowing electric bicycles manufactured before August 31 under the previous standards to remain on sale until November 30. Starting December 1, the sale of non-compliant models will be strictly banned. Authorities have clarified that consumers who already own older, non-compliant models are not required to scrap them, ensuring a smoother transition for existing users while enforcing stricter manufacturing standards for new products entering the market.
