Chinese automaker Chery Auto has announced an ambitious roadmap to mass-produce all-solid-state batteries by 2027, aiming to significantly enhance electric vehicle performance. The company plans to initiate a pilot testing scheme for these advanced batteries in 2026. This strategic move is designed to boost EV driving range to approximately 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) on a single charge. Gao Xinhua, Chery’s executive vice-president, revealed during the global innovation conference on October 18 that the batteries are expected to achieve an energy density of 400 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg) this year, progressing to 600 Wh/kg by 2025. This announcement places Chery in direct competition with other major industry players; GAC Group targets similar commercialization by 2026, while Changan and battery giant CATL aim for 2027. Meanwhile, Japanese pioneers like Toyota and Nissan are targeting volume production by 2028. All-solid-state technology utilizes solid electrolytes instead of liquid ones, offering theoretically higher thermal stability and energy density compared to current lithium-ion batteries, marking a critical evolution in the global automotive sector.
