Chennai NGOs Distribute Water Bowls and Bird Feeders to Help Strays Survive Summer Heat

As Chennai faces intense summer heat, two local organizations are implementing sustainable initiatives to support stray animals and urban birds. The Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary (BMAD) in Besant Nagar is distributing free cement water bowls to residents and community feeders to combat dehydration among street animals, whose natural water sources have diminished due to urban development. Due to high demand, BMAD distributed its initial stock of 150 bowls rapidly and has ordered more, while emphasizing the need for regular maintenance to prevent mosquito breeding. Simultaneously, the NGO Thuvakkam organized a workshop in Valasaravakkam teaching participants to create eco-friendly bird feeders from discarded coconut shells. This DIY initiative aims to ensure birds have access to food across city terraces and urban forests. Both efforts highlight community-driven solutions to help voiceless residents endure extreme weather conditions through simple, accessible acts of kindness and resourcefulness.
