Chennai Corporation Initiates Mechanical Desilting of Drains Ahead of Monsoon

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has commenced mechanical desilting operations on clogged stormwater drains at critical road junctions across the city. This proactive measure aims to prepare Chennai for the upcoming Southeast monsoon and address the increasing volume of resident complaints regarding water stagnation. Although the city typically experiences heavy rainfall during the Northeast monsoon, the civic body has accelerated these maintenance efforts due to immediate local concerns. Machinery has been deployed in congested areas, including Haddows Road, with ongoing work in key neighborhoods such as Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Ambattur, and Teynampet. Local councillors have highlighted specific problem areas, noting that long-standing blockages in Anna Nagar have historically caused flooding. In Purasawalkam, officials emphasized the need to not only clear existing drains but also complete incomplete infrastructure projects. High flood risks in this area are exacerbated by ongoing metro rail construction. Residents have urged the GCC to expedite unfinished drain works on Brick Kiln Road and Gangadeeswarar Koil Road, where progress has stalled due to road crossing complications. The initiative reflects a broader effort to mitigate urban flooding risks through improved drainage infrastructure maintenance and completion.
