Charges Framed Against IIT-B Student in Darshan Solanki Suicide Case
A special court in Mumbai has framed charges against Arman Khatri, a student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B), over three years after the suicide of fellow student Darshan Solanki. Khatri faces allegations under sections of the Indian Penal Code for abetment of suicide and aggravated criminal intimidation, as well as provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Solanki died by suicide in February 2023, allegedly after a confrontation with Khatri involving a communal remark and a threat with a paper cutter. A note found in Solanki’s room stating “Arman has killed me” was cited as key evidence. Although an initial IIT-B inquiry found no specific evidence of caste-based discrimination, a Special Investigation Team pursued the case. Khatri, who was granted bail in 2023, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial is now set to commence. Previously, Khatri had approached the Bombay High Court in 2025 to quash the proceedings but withdrew the plea. This development marks a significant legal milestone in a case that drew national attention regarding campus safety and caste dynamics.
