Census 2027 Launches in New Delhi with Digital House Mapping Phase

The first phase of the Census 2027 exercise has officially commenced in the New Delhi district, specifically under the New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Cantonment areas. This initial stage, scheduled to continue until May 15, focuses on digitally mapping, geotagging, and numbering households to prepare for subsequent door-to-door surveys. Approximately 571 enumerators, who are government school teachers, have been deployed to cover 571 blocks, each responsible for roughly 180 to 200 houses. They are utilizing mobile applications to geo-reference locations within a 100-meter radius. The primary objective of this phase is to gather detailed data on housing conditions, household composition, and access to basic amenities. Each enumerator will receive a compensation of ₹25,000, paid in two instalments, for work conducted outside school hours and on weekends. While the self-enumeration window recently closed with low participation in some areas, it will reopen in Municipal Corporation of Delhi zones from May 1. The second phase of the census, which will include caste enumeration, is planned for February 2027, though its questionnaire has not yet been finalized.
