CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, is expanding its focus into the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sector with the launch of its new Freevoy super-hybrid battery. Despite holding a dominant 45.9% share in China's EV battery market, CATL aims to strengthen its position in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) segment, where it currently holds 40.2%. The Freevoy battery addresses common consumer complaints regarding short electric-only ranges and slow charging by offering up to 400 km of range and adding 280 km in just 10 minutes. This performance is achieved through an integrated AB system combining sodium-ion and lithium-ion materials, which also enhances low-temperature operation. CATL executives assert that PHEVs and extended-range hybrids (EREVs) are not temporary solutions but will remain major market options long-term. Over 30 upcoming models are scheduled to feature this technology.
