CATL Secures Deal for World’s First 24/7 Renewable Energy Project in UAE
Masdar, the United Arab Emirates’ leading clean energy company, has selected Chinese battery giant CATL to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS) for a groundbreaking renewable energy initiative. Announced on January 17, this $6 billion project aims to establish the world’s first large-scale, round-the-clock gigascale renewable energy facility. The infrastructure will feature a 5.2-gigawatt solar photovoltaic plant paired with a massive 19-gigawatt-hour energy storage system. This combination is designed to deliver up to 1 GW of baseload power continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Construction is scheduled to commence as soon as possible on a 90-square-kilometer site in the Abu Dhabi desert, with full operations expected by 2027. Abdulaziz Alobaidli, CEO of Masdar, highlighted the project's significance in advancing sustainable energy solutions. This collaboration marks a major milestone in global renewable energy development, demonstrating the feasibility of constant power supply from solar sources through advanced storage technology.
