CATL Files for Hong Kong Listing to Fund Hungary Battery Plant
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the Shenzhen-listed battery manufacturing giant, has officially applied for a secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The company aims to raise over $5 billion, marking potentially the largest fundraising exercise in Hong Kong since early 2021. According to its prospectus, the primary objective of this capital injection is to finance the construction of a new 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) battery pack factory in Hungary. CATL has already invested €700 million in this European facility and intends to use the proceeds from the share sale to cover the remaining costs for the project's first and second phases, which total approximately €4.2 billion. Currently, CATL operates 13 production bases globally, including existing facilities in Hungary and Thuringia, Germany. Additionally, the company anticipates receiving regulatory approval later this year for a joint venture plant with Stellantis in Spain. This strategic move underscores CATL's aggressive expansion into the European electric vehicle market, leveraging international capital markets to support its growing overseas infrastructure and solidify its position as a leading global supplier of electric vehicle batteries.
