Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has announced a strategic partnership with Alibaba’s fintech affiliate Ant Group and bike-sharing platform Hellobike to develop autonomous ride-hailing vehicles. The three entities have established a joint venture in Shanghai with an initial investment of RMB 3 billion (approximately $418 million). This collaboration aims to commercialize L4 highly autonomous driving technology, directly challenging established players like Waymo, Tesla, and Baidu in the competitive robotaxi market. Under the agreement, CATL will contribute its expertise in electric vehicle batteries and skateboard chassis technology. Ant Group will provide extensive support through fundamental research and development in artificial intelligence and robotics.
