Canada Can Lead in AI for Science
The Vector Institute marks its five-year anniversary by highlighting Canada's potential to lead in 'AI for Science,' a strategic focus on using artificial intelligence to advance scientific and engineering discovery. While AI adoption in Canadian industry lags behind international competitors, the Institute aims to bolster research capacity in materials science, drug discovery, and quantum applications. This initiative aligns with the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, leveraging new appointments such as the Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, including Anatole von Lilienfeld, Juan Felipe Carrasquilla Álvarez, and Alán Aspuru-Guzik. Additionally, the University of Toronto has launched the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship, supported by Schmidt Futures. The Vector Institute will support an initial cohort of ten fellows, doubling to twenty in subsequent years, to foster an interdisciplinary community of AI-fluent scientists.
