Early summer temperatures reaching approximately 20 degrees Celsius triggered the initial flight. Persistent dry conditions since March have weakened the natural defenses of shallow-rooted spruce trees, increasing their susceptibility to infestation. Experts warn that forests with previous infestations or those located on south and southwest-facing slopes are at highest risk. Immediate action, including felling and removing infested trees, is crucial to control the population, as warm weather can allow beetles to produce up to three generations and 160,000 offspring. While a climate change-related plague peaked in 2023, recent forest protection measures have significantly reduced damaged wood volumes. In 2024, around 3.5 million cubic meters of damaged wood were recorded, dropping to 473,000 cubic meters last year. Currently, only 3,550 cubic meters of unfelled infested wood remain registered, indicating improved containment compared to previous years.
