Ex-AWS Leaders Launch Soma Energy with $7M to Tackle Data Center Power Crunch
Soma Energy, a Vancouver-based startup founded by former Amazon Web Services (AWS) executives, has emerged from stealth mode after securing $7 million USD in pre-seed and seed funding. Led by CEO Ath Caramanolis and CTO Mario Souto, the company aims to address the growing electricity demand of AI-driven data centers through an AI-powered optimization platform. This technology manages the interaction between generators, battery storage, and broader electrical infrastructure to reduce costs and unlock additional power capacity without requiring new physical infrastructure. The founders leverage their experience building energy systems at AWS, where they managed gigawatts of renewable assets. With data center power demand in the US projected to exceed Texas's total output by 2028, Soma argues that better orchestration is key to meeting immediate needs, as new infrastructure takes years to deploy. The funding round was led by Category Ventures, with participation from Haystack, RRE Ventures, and others. Soma plans to use the capital to expand its engineering and commercial teams while deploying its solution across North America, currently optimizing two gigawatts of electricity for clients.
