Anthropic Secures Full Compute Capacity of xAI's Colossus Supercomputer

Anthropic has signed a significant agreement with SpaceX to utilize the entire compute capacity of xAI's Colossus 1 supercomputer in Memphis. This deal grants Anthropic access to over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and more than 300 megawatts of power within the month. The partnership marks a strategic shift for xAI, which was recently absorbed by SpaceX, as it reportedly struggles with low GPU utilization rates of only 11%. Despite previous public criticisms between Elon Musk and Anthropic regarding AI safety and ethics, Musk expressed confidence in Anthropic's team after recent meetings. Additionally, Anthropic has expressed interest in collaborating with SpaceX on developing orbital data centers, a concept championed by Musk but viewed skeptically by competitors like OpenAI. This arrangement allows xAI to monetize its infrastructure while focusing on rebuilding its internal operations with the upcoming Colossus 2 supercomputer. The move highlights the intensifying competition and complex alliances within the artificial intelligence sector, particularly concerning hardware resources and energy constraints.
