Andhra Pradesh to Link Nagavali and Champavati Rivers by 2027 for Irrigation

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an ambitious plan to complete major irrigation projects in the Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts by 2027. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed district collectors to accelerate these initiatives, aiming to provide assured water access to over two lakh acres of agricultural land. A central component of this strategy is the interlinking of the Nagavali and Champavati rivers, which will optimize water utilization and secure drinking water supplies for Vizianagaram city, currently dependent on the Champavati River. Additionally, the government plans to finish the Neradi project to better utilize Vamsadhara river waters and establish a distributory network from the Thotapalli reservoir to reach tail-end areas in Vizianagaram and Parvatipuram-Manyam districts. Officials are tasked with creating this canal network by May and June to benefit farmers in the upcoming Kharif season. The initiative has been praised by local agricultural representatives for addressing historical inefficiencies in water distribution and supporting farmers in backward districts. This development highlights the state's focused effort on enhancing infrastructure in North Andhra to boost agricultural productivity and ensure water security.
