Andhra Pradesh Launches PM RAHAT Scheme: Free Treatment for Road Accident Victims
Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav announced the implementation of the PM RAHAT scheme, providing free medical treatment worth up to ₹1.5 lakh for road accident victims across the state. The initiative aims to ensure timely care during the critical 'golden hour' and is available at 656 government and private hospitals. If treatment costs exceed this limit, expenses are covered under the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva scheme. During a stakeholders' conference in Vijayawada, the Minister emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among Transport, Health, and Police departments to reduce accidents, citing that 7,572 deaths occurred in 18,381 accidents in 2025, with overspeeding causing 79% of fatalities. He noted that 96% of victims in 2026 received treatment within the golden hour. Additionally, Health Secretary Saurabh Gaur stated that the 108 emergency service will integrate with the national 112 helpline by month's end, with plans to expand network hospitals to 1,500. The first case under the new scheme was registered in Chittoor district, marking a significant step toward improving emergency healthcare infrastructure and reducing mortality rates from road incidents in Andhra Pradesh.
