ANC Appoints James Nxumalo as KZN Provincial Coordinator Amid Leadership Reshuffle
The African National Congress (ANC) has reconfigured its leadership in KwaZulu-Natal, appointing James Nxumalo, a senior South African Communist Party leader and former eThekwini mayor, as the provincial task team coordinator. This strategic move aims to rebuild the party's structures and repair strained relations with the SACP following signals that the alliance partner might contest elections independently. The reshuffle, announced by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula after a National Executive Committee meeting in Durban, also saw Mike Mabuyakhulu elevated to convener following the recall of Jeff Radebe. Radebe was removed due to failures in convening regional conferences. Other changes included the removal of Weziwe Thusi and Nomusa Dube-Ncube, while Siboniso Duma and Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi retained their roles. New additions to the top six include Siphile Mdaka and Bongi Sithole-Moloi. The ANC faces significant challenges in the province, where the MK Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, has emerged as the dominant political force with over 45% of the vote. Consequently, the NEC has halted outstanding elective conferences to focus on organizational rebuilding and preparation for upcoming municipal elections.
