The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra State has issued a strict 48-hour ultimatum to the state government, threatening to down tools if Dr. Edwin Emegakor, an abducted member, is not released. The decision was reached during an Emergency General Meeting held on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Dr. Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital in Nkpor, was kidnapped by unidentified men in uniform on the evening of May 7 after attending to patients. As of Saturday morning, no communication had been established between the kidnappers and the doctor's family or colleagues. The NMA communiqué, signed by Chairman Dr. Princeston Okam and Secretary Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, condemned the rising insecurity and urged security agencies to intensify rescue efforts. While acknowledging Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts in healthcare service delivery, the association demanded immediate action to tackle insecurity. The NMA stated that all doctors in Anambra would cease work upon the expiration of the timeline if their colleague remains captive.
