Aliro Smart Lock Standard Promises Easier Access, But Upgrades Can Wait

Aliro, a new universal digital key standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, is beginning to roll out with compatible smart locks from brands like Ultraloq, Aqara, and Schlage. This technology allows users to unlock doors by tapping their smartphones or smartwatches against the lock, utilizing Near Field Communication (NFC) similar to mobile payment systems. Unlike platform-specific solutions such as Apple Home Key, Aliro ensures interoperability across major ecosystems including Amazon, Apple, Google, and Samsung, enabling seamless access sharing between iPhone and Android users via digital wallets. Despite these advancements in convenience and cross-platform compatibility, experts advise consumers against rushing to upgrade existing hardware. Since Aliro is not backward-compatible, it requires new devices, yet current smart locks remain fully functional. The article suggests that while Aliro represents a meaningful improvement for unifying smart home access, those with working locks do not need to replace them immediately, as the core unlocking experience remains largely unchanged for single-platform users.
