Alibaba Rebrands Instant Delivery to Taobao Flash Buy Amid Rising Competition
Alibaba is rebranding and upgrading its instant delivery service, formerly known as Taobao Hourly Delivery, to Taobao Flash Buy. This strategic move aims to strengthen its position in China’s fiercely competitive instant retail market, particularly against rival JD.com. The new service is currently rolling out in 50 cities and is scheduled for a nationwide launch by May 6. To support this expansion, Alibaba’s food delivery arm, Ele.me, will provide backend support and integrate its full inventory, including food delivery, into the platform. The initiative features over RMB 10 billion in joint subsidies from Taobao and Ele.me, offering consumers significant discounts and coupons. On the supply side, the service plans to partner with 200 national chain brands to establish instant retail flagship stores. Since its initial wide launch in July 2024, the service has integrated over 3 million stores, identifying core strengths in categories such as electronics, fashion, fresh food, and pet supplies. This consolidation unifies all real-time retail operations under Alibaba’s e-commerce arm, marking a significant escalation in the battle for dominance in China’s on-demand retail sector.
