Alibaba to Issue $1.5 Billion Exchangeable Bonds for Global Expansion
Chinese tech giant Alibaba announced on July 3 its plan to issue HK$12 billion (approximately $1.5 billion) in zero-coupon exchangeable bonds due in 2032. The proceeds are designated to fund the company's cloud infrastructure development and accelerate its global e-commerce expansion. These bonds will reference shares of Alibaba Health, a subsidiary whose stock has risen significantly this year. This financial structure allows Alibaba to secure low-cost financing without diluting its equity, as the group retains control even if the bonds are fully settled in stock. The move aligns with CEO Eddie Wu’s strategic focus on domestic and international e-commerce, AI, and cloud technology. Recently, Alibaba merged Ele.me and Fliggy into its China digital commerce unit and committed RMB 380 billion over three years to cloud and AI investments. Despite the bond issuance, Alibaba confirmed that Alibaba Health’s operations and collaborations will remain unaffected, with continued support from the parent company. As of March, Alibaba reported net cash of RMB 366.4 billion, underscoring its strong financial position amidst these aggressive investment plans.
