4,755 NCR Land Dispute Cases Registered in Sarawak Native Court
Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department for Native Laws and Customs, revealed that 4,755 Native Customary Rights (NCR) land dispute cases were registered with the Sarawak Native Court as of May 1 this year. During a State Legislative Assembly session, he detailed that 1,316 cases remain unresolved at the District level, 187 at the Resident level, and 92 at the Appeal level. To expedite case disposal, the court has implemented Capacity Building Programmes for staff and engagement sessions for community leaders in districts like Sri Aman, Sibu, and Limbang. Furthermore, Jamit announced progress on the Native Court Transformation Plan, aimed at elevating the court's status to match Civil and Syariah Courts. A study completed in 2023 received principled approval from the State Cabinet, leading to the drafting of a new Native Courts Bill. This legislation will repeal the 1992 Ordinance, restructuring the court’s administrative framework and jurisdiction to improve efficiency and legal standing within Sarawak's judicial system.
