Three matches, four goals, one point.
Three matches, four goals, one point.
They scored one more than Iran, but had fewer points than anyone. New Zealand's 2026 World Cup campaign: the cause of death is written on every statistical sheet.
On June 16, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, against Iran. In the 7th minute, Just smashed a right-footed volley into the net. Wood's delivery from Nottingham Forest in the Premier League was still there, the pass perfectly weighted. The 26-year-old Just—Chinese mother, German father, valued at €2.5 million, playing for Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership—grew up in the gap between rugby and cricket. With that shot, he gave the All Whites a dream start. He ran to the stands and blew a kiss; the camera panned over, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino was sitting in that row.
The lead lasted 25 minutes. In the 32nd minute, Rezaeian equalized. In the 54th minute of the second half, Just struck again. FIFA's official website called it a "cracking goal," describing him as a "free-spirited winger." 2-1. New Zealand thought they were safe. In the 64th minute, Mohebi scored with a header, assisted by Rezaeian. 2-2. In the 94th minute of stoppage time, Ryan Thomas cleared Iran's would-be winner off the line. Wood recorded two assists in that match, more than his total for the entire 2025-26 Premier League season. A 34-year-old Premier League bench striker produced season-best numbers at the World Cup, and still couldn't get a win.
Six days later, at BC Place in Vancouver, against Egypt. In the 15th minute, Surman headed in from a Payne corner. 1-0. At halftime, New Zealand went into the dressing room with a one-goal lead. In the second half, Egypt dismantled the New Zealand defense: in the 58th minute, Zizo equalized; in the 67th minute, Salah fired home a reverse pass from Zizo to take the lead; in the 82nd minute, Trezeguet scored a header from a Salah corner to kill the game. 1-3. Egypt secured their first-ever World Cup win.
Two matches, two opening goals, two comebacks conceded. Three matches, 10 goals conceded. Every time New Zealand took the lead, their defense would suffer a blackout within the following minutes. Against Iran, the lead lasted 25 minutes before being equalized. Against Egypt, the lead lasted 43 minutes before being equalized.
After the match, head coach Bazeley said: "It does feel a bit like a missed opportunity. We played well, we scored goals, we created chances." Played well, scored goals, created chances. All the data was right; all the results were wrong.
Looking through New Zealand's 26-man squad, the root of the problem is in their resumes. Wood and Bindon are at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League; Just is at Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership. That's the ceiling. Below them: Crocombe at Millwall in the Championship, Stamenic at Swansea City in the Championship, Cacace at Wrexham in League One, Thomas at Zwolle in the Eredivisie, Bell at Viking in the Norwegian Eliteserien. Even further down: Smith, at Braintree Town in the sixth tier of English football, last played for the national team in 2024, and still made the World Cup squad.
From the Premier League to the sixth tier of England, this starting lineup had never played together at the same level. Most of them earn their living in leagues like MLS and the Championship, never having experienced the baptism of fire needed to hold a 1-0 lead until the final whistle. Iran's Mohebi plays in the Iranian league; Egypt's Zizo plays in the Egyptian league. But behind them stands a defense accustomed to being under siege, used to putting their bodies on the line. Behind New Zealand stands a collection of disparate resumes.
The final round: they had to take points from Belgium. June 27, Vancouver. Halftime stats: Shots 0-16, Shots on target 0-4, Possession 38%-62%. New Zealand didn't manage their first shot until the 55th minute, a Just effort that forced a save from Courtois.
In the 28th minute, Trossard headed in from a De Bruyne corner. In the 50th minute, Trossard scored his second. In the 66th minute, De Bruyne scored from 30 yards. xG was 0.25 to 3.65. New Zealand needed 4 shots to expect one goal; Belgium needed 3. But Belgium had 16 shots; New Zealand had just one.
In the 84th minute, Just fired home a consolation goal. His third of the tournament, his 11th in 45 international caps, making him the first All White to score a brace in a single World Cup match. In the 85th minute, Lukaku came off the bench. In the 86th minute, he scored with a header. First touch, and the ball was in the net. A Belgian substitute worth tens of millions of euros killed the game within 60 seconds of coming on. In the 94th minute, Saelemaekers scored from a Lukaku assist. 1-5.
Belgium and Egypt advanced from Group G, both with 5 points. Iran finished third with 3 points, scoring only 3 goals in 3 matches—one less than New Zealand—but they drew all three games and remained unbeaten. New Zealand scored 4, conceded 10, had 1 point, and finished bottom.
Just watched Lukaku run to the corner flag in the Vancouver night air. He had played 84 minutes and managed to score just one. The substitute on the other side had needed only 60 seconds.
