At SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, David Alaba played the full 90 minutes with the captain's armband on his left arm.
His team had five shots, zero on target.
A 3-0 scoreline was the decency on the board; zero shots on target was the reality on the pitch.
Two days earlier, his Real Madrid contract had just expired. No renewal. Over the past two years, his left knee had undergone two surgeries. A torn anterior cruciate ligament in December 2023, and a torn meniscus again in April 2025. Just 14 appearances last season.
Now a free agent. His knee is old, his next destination is empty.
Across from him, the Spanish side had not a single Real Madrid player in their 26-man squad. The first time in the team's history. Eight Barcelona youngsters formed the backbone, with 18-year-old Lamine Yamal playing through injury.
Rangnick pointed out this contrast specifically in the post-match press conference: Alaba was the only Real Madrid player on either team. He made an analogy, saying it felt like a German national team without any Bayern Munich players.
And it was precisely this lone Real Madrid figure who was pinned back and battered by a Spanish team devoid of any Madrid players.
The stats were even more suffocating. Spain had 23 shots, 10 on target. Austria had five shots, none on target. Goalkeeper Schlager didn't make a single real save all night. Corner kicks were 9-0. Expected goals (xG) were 2.84 to 0.32.
The Spanish turned possession into a rosary, keeping the ball firmly above 65%. Austria never once made Unai Simón move.
Every goal came from a set pattern. Oyarzabal broke the deadlock with a left-footed strike in the 36th minute. Porro scored with a header in the 66th minute. In the 89th minute, Oyarzabal finished another assist from Cucurella to complete his brace. Cucurella himself recorded two assists.
Alaba was busy throughout. He cleared a sure goal from Yamal off the goal line. When the broadcast cut to him, he was shouting at his teammates, the verbal clash written all over his face.
A reporter for The New York Times wrote sharply: "Alaba did more work tonight than in his entire injury-riddled two seasons at Real Madrid combined. Roughly."
Worse still was Arnautović. He sat on the bench for the entire match.
37 years old. Austria's all-time appearance leader with 134 caps. Their all-time top scorer with 47 goals. He scored four against San Marino in October 2025, breaking Toni Polster's record. In this group stage, he scored a penalty against Jordan and another goal against Algeria.
This was his last match for the national team.
The New York Times had pointed it out before the game: "The biggest news in the Austrian camp is that Arnautović has been dropped to the bench." Mwene was a spectator due to injury, while Lienhart and Arnautović were firmly rooted to the bench.
The nation's all-time top scorer didn't even get the dignity of a final 90 minutes. After the match, he gave a speech in the locker room, and the entire team was in tears.
Rangnick revealed the truth after the match. He admitted that Austria, in the next two years within their domestic league and youth academy, could not find any obvious young successors.
Simply put, it's a matter of population assessment. Austria's pool is this size. A striker of this caliber won't appear again anytime soon.
This is the entirety of their resources. The last time they played in a World Cup was 1998, 28 years ago. When Rangnick took over in June 2022, the team hadn't even made it to Qatar. In four years, he dragged a team absent for nearly three decades into the Round of 16. They beat Jordan 3-1 in the group stage, lost 0-2 to Argentina, drew 3-3 with Algeria, and secured a narrow qualification with a last-minute equalizer.
In a pre-match interview with FIFA, Rangnick had already conceded: "We are the absolute underdogs. There can't be a weaker team than us in this match."
After the match, he was even more direct in his praise for Spain: Rodri was the best player he had ever seen live, and the opponent had zero unforced errors for the entire game. A German coach describing an opponent with "zero errors" is no mere compliment. He even asserted that this Spanish team could lift the trophy.
Spain certainly deserved the praise. They have kept four consecutive clean sheets in this World Cup. They drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, beat Saudi Arabia 4-0, beat Uruguay 1-0 in the group stage, and now this 3-0 victory. Unai Simón has now gone over 390 minutes without conceding a goal.
After winning the title in 2010, Spain failed to reach the quarter-finals in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups. This is their first knockout stage victory in 16 years.
Yamal won the Man of the Match award. Rangnick had previously commented on his potential, saying he "could reach Messi's level." That statement was made after the 4-0 group stage win over Saudi Arabia. Yamal played through injury in this match, and his most dangerous shot was precisely the one Alaba cleared off the line.
Spain enters the quarter-finals with four consecutive clean sheets.
Alaba walked out of SoFi Stadium. The old injury in his left knee still ached dully, and a contract with his next club was nowhere in sight.
