Pass the ball to Ronaldo.
"Pass the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo."
Thousands of homogenized comments flooded Bruno Fernandes' social media. After Portugal's match against Uzbekistan, the comment section of this midfield core turned into an execution ground for fans venting their dissatisfaction.
João Neves' situation was even worse. After the game, he posted that Ronaldo was just an "ordinary player" on the pitch. This statement instantly ignited the fury of extremist fans. Neves' post was flooded with over 180,000 comments. His partner was forced to restrict account permissions to escape the relentless cyberbullying.
Extreme fans insist that teammates are isolating Ronaldo and not passing him the ball. Look at the game itself. The 39-year-old Ronaldo had 7 shots in total, 5 on target, and scored a brace. He frantically demanded the ball in the attacking third, showing an intense desire to shoot. Even after scoring two goals, the calls for "more possession" wouldn't stop. Blaming teammates for the team's poor performance cannot mask the midfield's breakdown. Portugal's overall attacking organization remained sluggish, yet fans reduced complex tactical issues to a simple "not passing."
Fernandes was also heavily criticized just for liking Neves' post. Fans turned tactical execution failures into a test of personal loyalty with the moral coercion of "passing to the king of football."
