At the Luho Hotel in Bodrum, Sorriso Italian restaurant. The 22-year-old girlfriend, in a red dress, had a strand of spaghetti dangling from her lips. 18-year-old Lennart Karl raised his phone, snapped the photo, and posted it to his Instagram Story.
Just over ten days ago, this body was in Chicago. The final training session before the Germany vs. USA warm-up match, a full sprint. June 5th, a tear in the left thigh muscle bundle. The 2026 World Cup turf wouldn't see him.
The 2025-26 season, around 40 competitive matches, 9 goals. That was Karl's performance ledger for Bayern. An 18-year-old attacker producing those numbers earned a ticket to the national team. Now, he could only soak up the sun in Turkey. By his side was his girlfriend Zoe, a model and TikTok influencer who co-founded the clothing brand Camogliii in 2024, boasting social media followers that dwarfed many Bundesliga starters.
"Playing in the World Cup was my ultimate dream; the injury was a huge blow to me," Karl told the media after getting hurt.
A blow, sure, but life goes on. An 18-year-old processes a raw deal with Bodrum's sunshine and the red dress at Sorriso. Before reporting back to Munich, he even caught a Bayern basketball game.
April: a torn muscle fiber in the back of the right thigh. June: a torn quadriceps muscle bundle in the front of the left thigh. Two months, two legs, two different muscle groups. The injury location changed, but the body's alarm never stopped.
The Bayern medical department wasn't just focused on Karl. The 30-year-old Gnabry was also reporting to the rehab center at the Säbener Strasse base, sidelined for an estimated 3 to 4 months after tearing an adductor muscle in mid-April. Tom Bischof, who missed the World Cup squad cut, wasn't idle either; after a vacation in Ibiza, he went to watch a tennis match in Stuttgart and snapped a photo with US star Ben Shelton. One injured out, one left off the roster – Bayern's summer lay in pieces.
The front office could already sense it. Kicker came right out and said it: the frequent injuries to young talents were no coincidence. When the treadmills at Säbener Strasse carry both an 18-year-old prodigy and a 30-year-old veteran, a club renowned for its meticulous calculations had shown a weakness in managing training load.
Bild's cameras caught Karl back at the Bayern performance center, jogging on a treadmill. The same newspaper estimated his absence at 2 to 3 months – he'd likely miss the pre-season training camp led by Kompany starting July 20th. The Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup on August 22nd became his comeback deadline.
"I'll be watching every Germany game," Karl said.
Less than two months until August 22nd. A body that had suffered two muscle tears in two months would need to provide an answer that both the team doctors and coaching staff could sign off on. If it couldn't, this 18-year-old's ledger would have to book another non-performing asset.
